Causes of Obesity in American Children

In the fast paced, digital world of today, more and more American children are becoming obese. Studies suggest that the reason for this is an increasingly sedentary lifestyle full of fast food. Once these unhealthy habits form, they are extremely hard to break. In order to combat childhood obesity, it's first important to understand the root of the problem. Unhealthy eating habits and a lack of exercise are the two main causes of obesity in American children.

The unhealthy diet of American children today is sure to lead to problems with obesity. Many Americans, both adults and adolescents, rely heavily on fast food and foods full of preservatives, sugars, and fats. Over-consumption of these foods is one of the central causes of obesity in American children. Since children are still dependent upon the guidance of their parents, it's the parents who must make a conscious choice to help their children develop healthier eating habits. To begin with, a child's diet should be well-rounded, including fresh fruits and vegetables. Food should not be used as a reward or for treating emotional distress. Obese children and their parents must learn to reassign value to food items and look to them specifically for their nourishment value.

Another one of the main causes of obesity in American children is the lack of exercise. In the adolescent years, a child should be incredibly active. Unfortunately, as a child becomes obese, the desire to be physically active is less appealing, as well as more difficult. If a child has too much trouble being active, the child will then become adverse to activity because it causes them to be self-conscious. However, a parent must encourage their child to begin physical activity by starting with easy activities and accompanying them for encouragement. The top ten reasons to exercise are the same for both adults and children. Remember, a child should be playing, and there's no better exercise than children's games such as tag, jump rope, and other sports.

There are many causes for obesity in American children, but there are also many ways to combat the trend. Helping our children to eat healthier and encouraging them to be active are the two best ways to decrease obesity. Of course, it must be noted that fighting childhood obesity is very much a family affair, and success will only come if the parents also work to improve the family's overall health.
