Benefits of Healthy Eating

One of the best ways to stay healthy is to eat healthy food. The old saying, "you are what you eat," while a cliche, is still true. The body has an amazing capacity to metabolize all sorts of things and derive nutrients even from substances that would be toxic in large amounts, but this is not ideal. Humans are omnivores, and unlike cats which can only eat meat, or horses which can only eat plants, we can survive on a wide variety of foods.

Ideally, the human body should receive a balanced, healthy diet and the benefit of regular exercise, but unfortunately most Americans get neither. The benefits of healthy eating include an ability to "cheat" a little on exercise, and vice versa. The best healthy diet is one that is balanced. Fad diets, while seemingly effective at ridding the body of excess weight quickly are not the best thing for the body.

One of the obvious benefits of healthy eating is a healthy weight. Excess weight can put you at risk for high blood pressure because excess fat causes your body to store too much sodium. When you're at a healthy weight, sodium is not as likely to cause high blood pressure. Other dangers of being overweight include type two diabetes, sleeping difficulties, stroke, and cancer.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in America, and can be avoided by eating healthy food. Even people who appear to be fit and healthy can be at risk for heart disease, but it's more likely with the overweight.

Another benefit of healthy eating is increased energy. Junk food has the tendency to bog you down after eating, but since it isn't providing necessary nutrients, you don't feel satisfied. Too much sugar and fat can cause a feeling of illness if eaten in large quantities, and sap energy from the body.

A final benefit of healthy eating is a feeling of confidence. When you're at a healthy weight, your clothes fit better, and you're better able to do the things you enjoy. Combined with various types of aerobic exercise, healthy eating is the way to a better you.
