Yoga has been practiced for 5,000 and more years, particularly in the East. In recent years it has also become popular in the West. It is helpful physically in that it gives one more strength, flexibility, better posture and increased body awareness. Mentally, it gives one better concentration, stress reduction, helps with anxiety, and increased self-esteem. Spiritually, it gives one peace of mind, better intuition, and connection of self with something higher.

Although this separates the benefits into three specific categories, in actuality there is overlap between the three. The breath exercises can help physically (increasing lung capacity), emotionally (calming), mentally (focusing), and spiritually (connected with something higher).

Research indicates the success of yoga. For treating depression, the National Institute for Mental Health in India found a 73% success rate. Further research is underway.

The improved body image is important. Yoga helps one to be less preoccupied with appearance and to give a better feeling about the body. For some, there are also benefits of weight loss. It is easier to be on a “less food” program when you have a strong mind/body connection.

Yoga can be done in the home. Videotapes are available and helpful. There are no gymnasium or health club fees. The investment is that of time and that pays off well physically, mentally, and spiritually.

One can experience greater joy and feel better about personal relationship. One can cope much better with life's ups and downs in ways that are positive and uplifting.
