Practicing Yoga for Your Body and Soul

The art of yoga has been practiced since ancient times. Yoga has long been a tool used in the orient to promote a healthy body, mind and soul. Recently, the value of yoga has been recognized in the modern world.

Yoga is a technique that combines stretching, breathing and balance. Because yoga is done in slow, fluid motions, it is low impact and is a benefit to even the most frail people. Even beginner yoga helps muscles and tendons. Yoga teaches people to not only stretch and balance, but how to do it in proper alignment. The body learns how to stand and move the way it was intended.

The mental and spiritual aspect of yoga comes in its slow, fluid and rhythmic methodology. Most of the time, yoga is practiced in a calm environment with gentle music playing in the background. Each yoga technique includes deep breathing in rhythm to the exercise. Deep breathing fills the body with oxygen while stretching and balancing centers the body and releases tension. When a person properly executes a yoga technique, they feel at peace because their body is relaxed and oxygenated. When the brain is getting the right amount of oxygen, it works better too. During yoga exercise, a person often feels their mental clarity is cleaner and they can contemplate more personal thoughts.

Yoga can be done in groups, but ultimately, yoga is one person moving their own body in gentle exercises while filling it with oxygen and relaxation. Yoga is personal and therefore each person experiences their own form of body and soul improvement. Yoga is good for anyone to practice no matter what the age, gender or physical ability. There is a yoga exercise for everyone. Most bookstores offer videos and books on all levels of yoga and public and private gyms generally offer group and individual classes too. It does not require expensive equipment. All you need is a mat and room to stretch out.
